Scottish Labour leader, Jim murphy's attempt to win ground from the SNP by asserting the party's "patriotic" credentials are misplaced and counter-productive. Labour needs to be true to its roots and stand up for working class interests.

The origins of the Charlie Hebdo attacks lie in the actions of imperialism abroad where it has caused devastation through war and promoting terrorism. At home poverty and discrimination also fuel extremism. Unity is needed to combat reactionary forces and indiscriminate attacks on Islam do not help this cause.

Despite their defeat the SNP will not give up on their objective of an independent Scotland. Their strategy in the campaign was to be unrelentingly positive promising that independence could deliver anything and everything. Better Together, the No campaign, was lumbered with a negative message from the outset. Labour damaged itself by campaigning alongside the Tories and the SNP hope to replace it as the main party in Scotland.

Israel's blatant aggression in Operation Protective Edge, directed against Gaza and other attacks on the Palestinians, including land-grabs, is beginning to loose it friends. Meanwhile the campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel is beginning to score notable successes.

Especially among those who experienced life in the Soviet Union a majority have a positive view of it. The economy delivered for people and some of its leaders are still regarded highly today. Today citizens of the former Soviet Union are worse off than they were before its demise and have a dim view of the benefits of capitalism and its political system.

The effects of climate change are already being felt, threatening vulnerable and poor peoples with hunger. Unless collective action is taken globally to address this problem the effects will be much worse in decades to come. That is a problem which laissez faire capitalism does not have the answers to.
