The Democratic Party establishment closed ranks behind Joe Biden to ensure that Bernie Sanders would not become its candidate to challenge Donald Trump for the Presidency, leaving voters and the left with an unappetising choice. Despite this establishment show of strength, however, the left is continuing to make advances within the Democratic Party.

Cuts imposed under austerity have not just impacted on people's health through cuts to NHS and care services, but also through cuts to other vital services which support physical and mental well-being. This includes access to libraries, culture and creative activities, which have experienced reduced funding. The situation has been made worse by the impact of coronavirus.

The coronavirus pandemic has once again demonstrated the clash between capitalism's priority of safeguarding profits over peoples lives. But it has also revealed the deeper problem that working class people's lives were already precarious before the virus struck. We are not in this together.

China was where the coronavirus outbreak originated, bit also where there was an effective response, bringing it under control. China has offered what it has learned about the virus along side practical support to other countries and Cuba too continues its tradition of health care solidarity with others. This contrasts sharply with the response of the United States which has tightened sanctions not only on Cuba, but on Venezuela and Iran.

Ten years after his first report Professor Sir Micheal Marmot shows that little has changed in terms of the health of the population. In fact things are getting worse, with stalling life expectancy. The report puts the blame on austerity - not only its impact on health services, but on the wider impact that cuts, poor housing and fewer opportunities
have had on peoples lives.
