Iran has become the number one enemy of the West due to its central role in the growing resistance to its interference in the region. The assassination of General Soleimani by the United States was a dangerously provocative act. The risk of another war has been heightened. As well as Iran other countries are becoming more assertive such as Russia and Turkey.

The United States failure to achieve regime change in Syria has led to a shifting power dynamic in the Middle East. Russia, Iran, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates have become more assertive and alliances between them have changed in ways which do not serve US interests. The US sees Iran's emergence as regional power as a particular threat to its own position as well as to Israel and Saudi Arabia.

One measure of its success is the Israeli response which, while trying to close the campaign down, in fact only draws further attention to Israeli actions.
